The Count had invited her to the races at Auteuil, and she shuffled with the rest of the chic ladies with their perfectly coifed hair on the arms of German officers. The enclosure now was reserved for high ranking officers and their `partners' and the chosen few aristocrats. She had chosen her outfit with great care, no obvious gold or silver, just a glorious confusion of green and coral. The Count remarked at her lack of ostentatious jewellery, and quickly pulled a profusion of glittering necklaces from his waistcoat pocket. `Choose one my dear, a lady can never wear enough gold!'. Hesitantly she chose a bracelet, and as he bent over to fasten the clasp she was aware of just how close he was to her. Much, to close. He was to charming……..,she must not fall for him, although maybe she had the minute she looked into those eyes. |
